Acai Berry Truth or Scam
There is so much information and misinformation on the web about the Acai Berry, that I thought it only fitting that I do a bit of research on my own. With so many sites making claims, and as many warning against scams, I really wasn’t sure if I should even post this on my herbal health site. So here is what I have found.
Claim: Oprah has endorsed the Acai Berry
Finding: False (and True)
I also called it true as there is an article on Oprah web site about the Acai Berry specifically. The article was written in 2005 and among other things states, “It may seem odd to start this list of superfoods with one you’ve likely never even heard of. But studies have shown that this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world! Açaí (ah-sigh-ee) is the high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree.” http://www.oprah.com/health/Acai-Dr-Perricones-No-1-Superfood
Since Oprah has an article promoting the benefits of the Acai Berry on her web site, she either agrees with the potential benefits of the fruit, or she is unaware that the article exists. My guess is the former. But for legal matters, I am sure she is distancing herself from any actual formal endorsement.
Claim: Scientific research has proven the Acai Berry to be an effective antioxidant
Finding: True
In an article at ScientificBlogging.com, the results of an actual semi-clinical test reveals that the berry actually does have significant health benefits as, “The Acai is the size of a blueberry but contains twice the antioxidants of its cousin and 10 times more than red grapes - 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.” However, the article goes on to warn, “Our concern has been that it is sold as a super food – and it definitely has some good attributes – but it is not a solution to all diseases.”
My conclusion is this, based on many medically based articles: The Acai Berry is highly beneficial, but should not be treated as a wonder drug. As in all recommendations on this site, moderation and balance are the key. Watch out for scams, and live a healthy lifestyle.
